Ministering to Women in
Crisis Pregnancies |
As Catholics who strongly
believe in the dignity of
life from the moment of
conception, Diane says it’s
easy to forget babies aren’t
the only victims of
abortion. “Women so often
transfer their grief into
something else. Women come
to me saying, ‘My husband
left me. I wonder if it’s
because I had an abortion.’
Or, ‘My teenager has turned
to drugs. Is it because I
aborted his older brother or
sister?’” says Diane.
“Abortion is not a quick fix
and it hurts women for a
long, long time.”
Here’s how you can give
unborn babies a voice and
help women in crisis
pregnancies:
- Love them. Resist the
impulse to lecture a woman
considering abortion and instead
offer her your love. “Love them
for who they are. They already
don’t love themselves if this is
what they want to do.” says
Diane. “They may want to abort
because ‘My mom and dad will
never approve,’ or ‘My husband
doesn’t love me.’ But if you can
convince them of their worth in
God’s eyes, they may also be
persuaded that it’s going to be
okay.”
- Remind them of a child’s
love. “The miracle they’re
carrying inside of them is going
to love them, and help them get
through lonely times,” says
Diane. “I’ll often tell pregnant
women that life is hard and
lonely for every single one of
us, but children bring so much
joy. I don’t lie. Children can
give you the worst headache in
the world, but man, do they
bring you a joy like you’ve
never had before.”
- Ditch the pity.
Unmarried women are often
fearful of raising a child on
their own. However, the last
thing they need is your pity,
according to Diane, who is a
single mom herself. “It does get
easier and it’s something women
can do. We’ve got the perfect
spouse – Jesus.”
- Be open to life. Not
all of us can pound at the
pavement outside of abortion
clinics, but by being open to
life we’re constantly sending
the message that children are
gifts from God to be cherished.
“I cannot count how many moms -
often Catholic moms - touch a
girl’s heart in the waiting
room. A girl will come in and
say, ‘There was a lady out there
who had kids and they said
something nice to me.’”
Likewise, Diane encourages
reaching out to all pregnant
women you see. “You don’t
realize how much you can do, how
you can help a woman and baby in
need just by saying, ‘You look
great. It’s so wonderful that
you’re pregnant.’”
