Writers' Guidelines
Canticle Magazine, a bi-monthly publication of Women of
Grace®, is the only journal dedicated solely to the woman’s vocation
within the Church. Understanding that the feminine vocation is to be
found most fully in the image of Holy Mother Church herself,
Canticle endeavors to combine the supernatural realities of living
in an incarnational world with practical and accessible material
that recognizes the challenges of our day and time.
We welcome submissions that reflect a solid and mature grasp of
authentic Catholic faith. Write in a tone that is positive and
respectful, recognizing that the Holy Spirit guides the Church and
provides numerous legitimate charisms to help her members grow in
holiness.
We strongly recommend subscribing to Canticle, or at least
reading the most current issue, prior to submitting an article. In
addition, writers must read and follow carefully the “general
guidelines” below.

Regular Issues Include
Feature articles of varying lengths, not to
exceed 1,500 words each: Examples include seasonal features,
interviews, practical Christian living, biographical reflections on
women saints that shed fresh light on the feminine vocation, and
reflections on an aspect of Church teaching that is especially
relevant to faithful Catholic women. We pay up to $150 for assigned
articles; unsolicited articles pay less, depending on the level of
reworking needed and whether the author has worked with us in the
past. (Current subscribers preferred.)
For sample articles, click on titles below.
•
Interview: Sister Olga Yaqob: An Iraqi with a Heart for America
•
Saint Reflection: The Rehabilitation of Joan of Arc
•
Practical Christian Living: You Are Beautiful, My Beloved

Columns (500-550 words each): Although many of
our columns are assigned, the italicized columns remain open for
submissions. We pay $75 for assigned columns; unsolicited columns may
be compensated at a lower rate. (Current subscribers preferred.)
Fillers, Photography, and Sidebars (150-300 words):
Although we do not pay for fillers, contributors will receive a free
copy of the magazine in which their submission appears. (This category
is the best place for writers previously unpublished by Canticle to
get a foot in the door!) Examples include short, humorous anecdotes
about living the faith within your vacation, or practical sidebars
with tips on various aspects of authentic feminine life (from
motherhood to single life to ministry).
If filler material is reprinted, indicate where and when the article
first appeared in query letter. We do not accept reprints for columns
or features.
General Guidelines (please read carefully before
submitting an article): Electronic submissions strongly
preferred.
All submissions should include a cover letter
(or query letter) with the following information at the top: Name,
address, e-mail address, phone number, title of article, word count,
and rights available (first North American preferred). Ideas keyed to
theme list must be queried six months in advance.
Include a one-paragraph summary of article (Who is it for? What is the
intended “take-away” for readers? How is this idea unique, and how are
you uniquely qualified to write it?)
Short bio (1-2 sentences) that may be used if we
select your article for publication.
Please also note if artwork or photography is
available. Photos must be high-resolution files (300 dpi). JPG files
must not be compressed below maximum quality 10-12.
We prefer the Revised Standard Version (RSV, Catholic
Edition) or New American Bible (NAB) when Scripture is quoted. All
Catechism and Bible quotes should be double-checked for accuracy and
include standard abbreviated citations (e.g. Ps 39:2; CCC #245).
Send submissions to articles@canticlemagazine.com with
the following in subject line: Author’s last name, type of article,
intended issue, and word count. (E.G., Saxton, “Tea with the Girls,”
feature for May issue, 1235 words) Except for accepted submissions
submitted in final form, which should take the form of a Word
attachment, all queries and articles should be pasted into a message.
Paper submissions should include an SASE with postage
sufficient to return manuscript (if you want it returned) or standard
first class postage (if only a response is desired) and sent to:
Editor, Canticle Magazine, 325 Scarlet Blvd, Oldsmar FL 34677
